Whether you’re an avid sewer or you just like to create a few ideas on a whim as a hobby, you might have quite a few sewing supplies that seem to become scattered about your home. Common items that can sometimes become hard to find include small spools of thread, needles, and thimbles. With a few simple ideas, you can keep everything organized to ensure that the supplies you need are within reach.

Storage
One of the first things to do is to create a storage area for all of the supplies that you use. Consider the sizes of each item as well as the number of items that you have that are similar to each other. Small plastic containers can be stacked together on top of a desk with larger containers stacked on the floor. Consider labeling the drawers or lids to ensure that you can easily find what you’re looking for when it’s needed. You can also create a storage system for the sewing patterns and solid prints that you have that are used for things like clothes or blankets.
Clearing Out
Once you have the storage containers that you want to use, try to go through all of your supplies to determine what you really use compared to what you could throw away. Things like thread, broken tools, and patterns that you no longer use can be thrown away or even donated if they can still be used for other purposes. When you’re looking at your thread, try to make sure it’s not raveled and that you don’t have too many spools that only have a little left on them as these can sometimes be put together to decrease the number of spools that you have.
Have Fun
Instead of organizing your sewing supplies in a random way or in a way that doesn’t bring excitement to you, consider organizing them in a rainbow or in themes. You could put spools of thread on a wall on hooks from red to purple so that it looks like you’re looking at a rainbow on the wall. You can also organize fabrics by holidays or colors, such as Christmas and winter together or Easter and spring together. This idea is one that can be beneficial as it can make it easier to find certain designs during the year when they are needed instead of looking for light or dark colors for specific seasons or holidays that might be mixed among other colors and designs.
Needles
Other items that you might want to organize specifically are needles. You likely have different sizes of needles, which can make it difficult to find what you might be looking for if they are all in one place. Consider putting smaller needles in a small container and the larger ones in drawers so that you have easy access to them. You could also sort by how they are used, such as clothing needles or those used for quilts and blankets.
When you have an abundance of sewing supplies, it can be difficult to keep everything sorted. Once you have the supplies to organize, you can keep everything in one area so that you can have fun while sewing.
